Hanoi (VNA) – Leaders of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho and the EU Delegation toVietnam on November 23 shared a hope for multilateral cooperation in climatechange response.
At a reception forthe EU Delegation, Tran Viet Truong, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee,said Can Tho in particular and the Mekong Delta region in general are facingunpredictable developments of climate change, including flooding, saltwaterintrusion, drought and erosion.
Can Tho wants tolearn from EU countries’ experience in this regard, and call for theirinvestment in high-tech infrastructure to adapt to climate change, the officialsaid.
The city is also seekingcooperation opportunities with the EU in high-quality personnel training inhealth care and education through research programmes, he added.
Ambassador Pier Giorgio Aliberti, head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, said the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), ratified in August,offers an opportunity for Mekong Delta cities and provinces to strengthentrade ties with the EU in such areas as fishery and agriculture.
Asof November 2020, Can Tho had counted 85 FDI projects valued at 725.43 millionUSD, including eight worth 73.08 million USD from the EU./.
