Cambodian PM Hun Sen concludes official trip to Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Senconcluded his official visit to Vietnam from December 6 to 8 at the invitationof his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

During the trip, PM Hun Sen had talks with PMNguyen Xuan Phuc and met with General Secretary of the Communist Party ofVietnam (CPV) Central Committee and President Nguyen Phu Trong and NationalAssembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

He had a meeting with representatives of theVietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association and attended a business forum of thetwo countries. He also laid a wreath at the Monument to War Heroes and Martyrsand paid tribute to late Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh at his Mausoleum inHanoi.

At the meetings, the two sides highlighted thatVietnam and Cambodia boast friendly neighbourliness and traditional cooperationand stood side by side in the struggles for national independence. Thisrelationship is a precious common asset of the two peoples, so it needs to betreasured and developed unceasingly for the sake of future generations.

They agreed to hold activities in both countriesto mark the 40th anniversary of the victory over the Khmer Rouge genocidalregime (January 7, 1979) so as to educate young Vietnamese and Cambodians ontheir countries’ traditions.

The leaders also agreed on major orientationsfor the promotion of bilateral ties under the motto “sound neigbourliness,traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-termsustainability”.

They were unanimous in further enhancingdefence-security cooperation to firmly safeguard each country’s peace, securityand stability, persisting in the principle of not allowing hostile forces touse a country’s territory to harm the other’s security, and coordinatingclosely to fight crimes and ensure security along the whole shared borderline.

The two sides will step up collaboration ineducation, training, capacity building, agro-forestry-fisheries, culture –arts, and people-to-people exchange. They will also keep dealing withoutstanding problems well, according to the leaders.

Vietnam and Cambodia will work towards thesigning of two documents to officially legalising the completion of 84 percentof the border demarcation and border marker planting in 2019, thereby helpingbuild a border of peace, friendship, cooperation and development.

The countries will also increase coordination tocreate favourable conditions for Vietnamese-Cambodians’ lives and ensure theirlegal status.

Regarding regional and international matters,both sides shared the view on the importance of maintaining peace, security andstability in the region. In the immediate future, they will work closelytogether in 2020 when Vietnam will hold the ASEAN Chair and Cambodia will hostthe Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit.

On this occasion, PMs Hun Sen and Nguyen XuanPhuc held a joint press conference and witnessed the signing of fivecooperation documents, namely a government-level MoU on the Vietnam-Cambodiatransport cooperation strategy for 2018-2025 with a vision to 2030; MoUson the completion of negotiations on a border trade agreement and educationalcooperation; the minutes on the completion of 84 percent of theborder demarcation and marker planting work in the field and futureplans for the work; and an agreement on the implementation of a project usingVietnam’s non-refundable aid for Cambodia to build some items in thecommunity-based voluntary drug detoxification centre project in Preah Sihanoukprovince. –VNA
