Cambodia: two political parties form alliance ahead of election

The Khmer National United Party led by Nhek Bun Chhay and the Cambodia National Justice Party headed by Heang Rithy signed on January 18 a memorandum of understanding on forging cooperation and an alliance to prepare for the upcoming commune and ward election and the general election in 2018.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Khmer National United Party led by Nhek BunChhay and the Cambodia National Justice Party headed by Heang Rithy signed onJanuary 18 a memorandum of understanding on forging cooperation and an allianceto prepare for the upcoming commune and ward election and the general electionin 2018.

In a joint statement issued after the signing ceremony, the two parties saidthat the cooperation and alliance are made on the basis of solidarity as wellas unity in political positions and with regard to the interests of the nationand the Khmer people.

They expected that the alliance will help the two parties reap positiveoutcomes in the upcoming elections.

By the end of 2016, 68 political parties have registered their operations atthe Interior Ministry, including 14 parties set up after the 2013 NationalAssembly election. Only the Cambodian People Party (CPP) and the CambodiaNational Rescue Party (CNRP) are sharing parliamentary seats.

Cambodia organizes the general election on a five-year basis. The latestelection took place in July 2013 during with Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen’sCPP won 68 seats and the CNRP secured 55 seats, out of the 123 seats in theNational Assembly.-VNA
