Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen called on people to useelectricity sparingly, fearing the country could lack up to 400 MW in availableelectricity during this dry season.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the fifth River Festival in Kampong Chhnangprovince last weekend, the PM said the droughts in several years dried up manyrivers and lakes across Cambodia.
He has called on the generalpublic, hoteliers and businesspeople with generators to use them as back-up asthe Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EDC) cannot generate enough electricityto meet needs due to low water levels in power station reservoirs.
EDC has yet commented on the information. However, a senior official from theagency said the prolonged dry spell has considerably affected power stationreservoirs across the country.
According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Water Resources andMeteorology, Battambang, Koh Kong, Prey Veng, Kampong Thom, OddarMeanchey and Preah Vihear provinces are forecast to be heavily impacted by thedry spell.
Most of Cambodia’s areas experienced the hardest dry year in 2016.-VNA
