Cambodia: Sam Rainsy sentenced to 20 months in jail

The Phnom Penh Court of First Instance on March 30 sentenced Sam Rainsy, former leader of CNRP, to 20 months in jail for accusing PM Hun Sen and the government of being behind the assassination of political analyst Kem Ley.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Phnom Penh Court of First Instance on March 30 sentencedSam Rainsy, former leader of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), to 20months in jail for accusing Prime Minister Hun Sen and the government of beingbehind the assassination of political analyst Kem Ley.

Sam Rainsy was charged with defamation and incitement to cause turmoil forsocial security according to Articles 305, 494 and 495 of the Penal Code.

Besides, Sam Rainsy was fined 10 million riel (2,500 USD) and asked to pay 100riel (2.5 US cents) in compensation to PM Hun Sen.

Earlier on March 23, the court gave life imprisonment to Eurth Ang (alias Choup Samlap),38, for murdering Kem Ley.

Sam Rainsy has been living in exile since November 2015 to avoid a two-yearimprisonment for defaming Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong. Sam Rainsy was alsogiven other sentences in Cambodia.

On February 11, 2017, he announced to resign and left the CNRP.-VNA
