Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on April 26, requested authorities at all levels to focus on distributing water to people in drought-hit areas, as the country has been severely hit by drought in recent months.

The PM announced the campaign during the inauguration ceremony of an interprovincial road, linking Banteay Meancheay and Otter Meancheay provinces.

He stressed that natural disaster has seriously affected daily life and production of Cambodians, while ordering political parties to work with the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) to effectively implement the campaign.

The leader also encouraged private corporations, and drinking water producers to join the campaign.

According to the National Centre for Disaster Management, drought has caused severe water shortages in 18 out of the country’s 25 cities and provinces.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the drought-hit localities are in much need of water already, and the drought is only forecast to become more severe, with the dry season fast approaching.-VNA
