Phnom Penh (VNA) – Sam Rainsy, leader of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), did not appeared for questioning at the prosecution’s headquarters in Phnom Penh on October 21 as requested by the agency.

On October 6, the country’s prosecution agency issued a summons on October 6 requiring Sam Rainsy to appear at the agency’s headquarters on October 21 for questioning in connection with security disturbances on September 11.

Ram Rainsy has been living in exile since November 2015 to avoid serving a two-year jail sentence for defaming Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong in 2008. He was also fined 2,500 USD by the Phnom Penh Court for defaming National Assembly President Heng Samrin.

The opposition leader has also been requested to appear for interrogation at the Phnom Penh Court on November 8, as he is the defendant in a defamation case filed by Sam Soeun, Minister Attached to Prime Minister Hun Sen on March 10, 2016.

Sam Soeun sued Sam Rainsy for posting on his Facebook page comments that affected the reputation of PM Hun Sen as well as Som Soeun himself.

He asked the court to prosecute Sam Rainsy and demanded he pay 20 million Riel (approximately 5,000 USD) in compensation for spiritual damage.-VNA
