Phnom Penh (VNA) - Acting president of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha left the party headquarters on the morning of October 5 for a nearby administrative office in Chak Angrea Leu ward, Khann Meanchey district, Phnom Penh to register to vote at forthcoming elections.

Kem Sokha has resided inside the CNRP headquarters since May 26 to avoid being arrested after his refusal to appear at court for a love scandal case against him.

On September 9, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced Sokha to five-month imprisonment and a fine of 800,000 Riels (200 USD) for his failed appearance at the court. On October 5, Sokha’s lawyers filed an appeal against the verdict.

Cambodian constituents must register between September 1 and November 29 to be allowed to vote at commune elections slated for June 2017 and the national assembly election in 2018.

In the last NA election in 2013, the CNRP won 55 seats compared to 68 seats secured by the Cambodian People's Party.-VNA
