Phnom Penh (VNA) – The VietnameseEmbassy in Cambodia hosted a banquet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties on June 22, with Cambodia’sPresident of the Senate Samdech Say Chhum in attendance.

Vietnamese Ambassador Thach Du said that 50years ago, on June 24, Vietnam and Cambodia established diplomatic ties for theinterests of their people.

In a letter sent to Cambodian King NorodomSihanouk, President Ho Chi Minh stressed that establishing diplomatic ties was“a vivid manifestation of the close friendship and solidarity in combat, ahistorical event in the Vietnam-Cambodia relations, and an active factor tomaintain peace in Southeast Asia”, Du said.

The ambassador lauded the support fromCambodian leaders and people for Vietnam’s struggle for national liberation andreunification, as well as for the repatriation of the remains of Vietnamesesoldiers who died in Cambodia.

Congratulating Cambodia on itssocio-economic development, Vietnam hopes the country will achieve more success,he added.

Say Chhum expressed his delight atdevelopment of the two countries’ friendship, reflected through regular visitsby their leaders.

According to him, in the context ofstrengthened political relations, bilateral economic, trade and investment tieshave also improved.

Two-way trade reached nearly 3 billion USDin 2016. The two countries’ leaders hope to raise the figure to 5 billion USDin the future.

About 1 million Vietnamese visit Cambodiaeach year, ranking first in terms of the number of foreign tourists to thecountry in the last eight years, he said.

President Say Chhum affirmed that Cambodianpeople are thankful for the Vietnamese people’s assistance in the past and atpresent, especially in helping liberate Cambodia from the Pol Pot genocidalregime in 1979.

He said he believes that the two countrieswill continue tightening their friendship, solidarity and cooperation forcommon prosperity.-VNA
