Hanoi (VNA) - Representatives from the Vietnamese Government, the USEmbassy and various ASEAN nations came together on August 1 and addressed theimportance of a growing ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and Vietnam–US traderelations.
At the opening ceremony of the 2017 YoungSoutheast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) in Hanoi, Vietnamese DeputyMinister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Nghia welcomed Ambassadors to Vietnamand 80 young delegates from ASEAN countries, saying it was an excellentoccasion to remind all of the opportunities that AEC provides its members, andto overcome economic development challenges.
Nghia also expressed hope that ASEAN youthswould learn more about AEC and contribute to its growth.
US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius remarked thatthe US was interested in the success of ASEAN and the AEC, as it is one of theleading investors in this region. He also said the US was committed tocreating the most favourable conditions for the region and its youth todevelop.
Through discussions and panel talks, the eventaimed to spread better understanding and share experience in balancing economicgrowth with sustainable development.
According the ASEAN Secretariat’s data, ASEAN isthe sixth largest economy in the world with 630 million people and nearly 2.6trillion USD in gross domestic production at the end of 2016.
Nghia suggested that "education is aleading solution in terms of both efficiency and sustainability in order toface rising socio-economic, environmental and non-traditional securitychallenges in the region".
She went on to list the eight ASEAN millenniumdevelopment goals, including eradicating poverty, advocating education, genderequality, health, environment and global partnerships.
Spanning four days from August 1 to August 4,the fourth annual YSEALI focuses on the AEC, the future for ASEAN economiccooperation and policy initiation. The event gathered outstanding youths fromall countries in the region in a bid to enhance leadership and connection.-VNA
