ASEAN supports quake, tsunami victims in Indonesia

– The AHA Centre, an intergovernmental organisationestablished by ten ASEAN member states with the aim of facilitating cooperation and coordination of disaster management in the region, handed over75 houses to tsunami victims in Palu city of Indonesia’s Central Sulawesiprovince on April 16.

Speaking at an online handover ceremony, the centre’sExecutive Director Adelina Kamal said that the disaster relief project wassupported by the Philippines and Brunei. It was completed in March 2020 aftereight months of construction, and is named “ASEAN Village”.

Mayor of Palu city Hidayat stated that the ASEAN Village ispart of joint efforts to address demand for housing of local residents who luckilysurvived after the 2018 earthquake and tsunami.

On September 28, 2018, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake rockedPalu, killing around 4,300 people, with many remaining unaccounted for. Theearthquake triggered cascading events including near-field tsunami, majorliquefaction and landslides, which damaged thousands of houses, and fishingvessels./.
