ASEAN pledges stronger cooperation in fighting trans-national crime

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese DeputyMinister of Public Security Lieut. Gen. Luong Tam Quang attended the 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC15) and related meetings via videoconference on September 29.

Speaking at the event, Quang said criminals aremaking full use of cyber space to commit offences. In such context, Vietnam’slaw enforcement agencies must assist other ministries and agencies in controllingthe pandemic while continuing its task of fighting crimes and achieved positiveresults, he said.

Vietnam pledged to engage actively and responsiblyin ASEAN cooperation frameworks and cooperate in trans-national crimeprevention and control in particular, he said.

The Deputy Minister suggested the regional states continue consolidatingcollaboration and creating mutual trust in the near future.

Amid the complicated developments of the pandemic,he called on the regional countries to pay attention to cooperating in bordermanagement and cyber security.

Parties concerned need to establish informationchannels, adapt to the “new normal”, enhance coordination with ASEAN’s dialoguepartners in personnel and language training, encourage partners to assist thebloc in COVID-19 response, provide vaccines, improve vaccine productioncapacity and facilitate the transfer of vaccine production technologies, hestated.

Minister of Defence II of Brunei andChair of AMMTC 15 Datu Seri Awang Halbi bin Mohd Yussof highlightedthe importance of the AMMTC cooperation mechanism, helping to maintain peace,stability and development in the region.

He said Brunei vows to continue upholding its rolein guiding ASEAN in maintaining dialogue, as well as in timely and effectiveresponse to unprecedented difficulties and challenges.

Participants at the event agreed on measures topromote goals in the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime, andadopted the Concept Paper entitled “ARegional BorderManagement Cooperation: Roadmap” initiated by Thailand and the ASEANStatement on post-pandemic trans-national crime prevention and control proposedby Brunei.

At the end of the meeting, the officials also approvedthe joint statement of AMMTC 15./.
