Rome (VNA) – The ASEAN needs tostrengthen its position and role in Italy in the coming time, stated VietnameseAmbassador to Italy Cao Chinh Thien.

He made the statement at a ceremony in Romeon January 12, when he assumed the chairman role of the ASEAN Committee in Rome(ACR), handed over by Philippine Ambassador to Italy Domingo P. Nolasco.

In his speech, the Vietnamese diplomatexpressed his honour to undertake the responsibility and his appreciation ofsupport from other ACR members.

Thien said he is committed to promoting theASEAN image in the European nation and enhancing the ties between ASEAN andItaly as well as between each ASEAN member country and Italy.

He noted 2017 marks ASEAN’s 50th founding anniversary, adding that the context lays stress on ACR’scommunications activities to raise awareness about ASEAN.

Founded in August 2011, the ACR comprises theAmbassadors of Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines andThailand.

ARC members take turn to hold thechairmanship every six months.-VNA
