ASEAN Naval Chiefs set to gather next week

The fifth ASEAN Naval Chiefs’ Meeting (ANCM-5) to take place on July 27, will share views and discuss cooperative measures to respond to security challenges in the region, said a Vietnamese vice admiral.
The fifth ASEAN Naval Chiefs’ Meeting (ANCM-5) to take place on July27, will share views and discuss cooperative measures to respond tosecurity challenges in the region, said a Vietnamese vice admiral.

Thiswas the first time Vietnam was chosen to host the defencecooperation event, Vice Admiral Pham Ngoc Minh, Vice Commander of theVietnam People’s Navy said in Hanoi on July 18, as he introduced theANCM-5 agenda.
Themed, “ASEAN Naval Cooperation formaritime peace and security”, the meeting will draw the participation ofnaval commanders from nine ASEAN member countries and the Lao defenceattache in Vietnam .

With a different focus to the fourprevious meetings, ANCM-5 aimed to raise responsibility and define theimportance of cooperation between naval forces of each ASEAN member, inmaintaining peace, stability and development in the region, according toMinh.

ANCM-5 would be a chance to show the role andresponsibility of host Vietnam in promoting cooperation between theVietnamese navy and navies of other ASEAN members, contributing toincreasing friendship while building mutual confidence andunderstanding.

Participants were expected to discuss Vietnam’s initiatives for ASEAN naval cooperation and the exchange of youngnaval officers between ASEAN countries.

At the event, theparticipants will register their cooperative activities for 2011 and2012. Vietnam will host an exchange of young naval officers amongASEAN countries, scheduled for early 2012, according to the Admiral./.
