The third meeting of Governors /Mayors (MGM) of ASEAN Capitals was held in Malaysia’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur from October 18-20.
Themed “ASEAN goes local: towards city networking”, the meeting aimed to establish a solid cooperative framework for local authorities, contributing to developing the ASEAN Community’s three pillars - the Political-Security Community, the Economic Community, and the Cultural- Social Community.
During the two-day event, participants discussed measures to speed up collaboration among ASEAN’s capitals towards the formation of the ASEAN Community by the end of 2015 and acknowledged significance of commitments and responsibilities in bolstering regional peace, security and prosperity.
The Vietnamese delegation to the event presented reports on Hanoi capital’s development and substantial development plans.
The meeting issued a joint statement, emphasising the promotion of a cooperation network among ASEAN countries’ capitals in education, capacity building, tourism, culture and sustainable development.
The meeting launched a website with a view of boosting connectivity, information sharing, economic development and people-to-people exchanges among ASEAN countries’ capitals.
The meeting welcomed Laos’ proposal to host the next MGM of ASEAN Capitals in 2016 in Vientiane.-VNA
