Hanoi (VNA) - A virtual meeting involving ASEAN ambassadors and trade office representatives and 40 export-import firms in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul took place on June 25.

It was part of the activities of the ASEAN Committee in Brazil, with an aim to promote images and trade between the regional bloc and the Latin American country.

The Brazilian state boasts a population of 12 million and have numerous similarities with ASEAN nations in terms of climate and economic structure. 

Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Thi Kim Hoa, head of the ASEAN Committee in Brazil, introduced the fields of cooperation potential between ASEAN and Brazilian businesses, including trade-investment, agriculture and food security, national defence, technology, human trafficking prevention, and maritime safety.

ASEAN was the third largest trade partner of Brazil last year, with two-way trade reaching 21 billion USD.

Head of the Vietnamese trade office in Brazil Ngo Xuan Ty also briefed Brazilian firms on the countries’ investment potential.

Statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs show that Vietnam-Brazil trade neared 2.64 billion USD in the first five months of 2021, a year-on-year surge of 61 percent. 

Of the figure, Vietnam earned 893.5 million USD from exports to Brazil, up 30 percent against the same period last year.

The country primarily shipped iron and steel products, metals, wooden furniture, computers, electronic products and components, among others, to the Latin American nation./.
