Hanoi (VNA) – Preparations for the general election, slated for May 22, are almost completed nationwide, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Tran Anh Tuan said.

During the election, deputies to the 14th National Assembly (NA) and all-level People’s Councils for the 2016 – 2021 tenure will be chosen.

Tuan said the People’s Committees at different levels have set up agencies in charge of the election with 63 provincial-level election committees, 712 district-level election committees and 11,162 communal-level election committees.

There are 184 boards for the NA deputy election, along with 1,096 provincial boards, 6,721 district boards and 79,988 communal boards for People’s Council election.

Deputy Minister Tuan said local authorities are working to ensure migrant workers in industrial parks, those accused of crimes and ethnic minorities can vote in the election.

Authorised agencies have also dealt with complaints and denunciations regarding the candidates.

Local election committees and armed forces have devised plans on responding to unexpected incidents, taken actions to prevent sabotage plots of anti-State organisations, and cracked down on crimes, he noted.

According to a resolution of the National Election Council, there are 184 constituencies for the NA deputy election and the new parliament will comprise 500 deputies. Meanwhile, there are 870 candidates running for those seats.

Provincial People’s Councils across Vietnam will have 3,918 deputies to be vied by 6,528 candidates. At the district level, 24,993 out of 41,777 candidates will be elected as council members. The respective figures for the communal level are 294,055 and 497,312.-VNA
