APEC working groups discuss cooperation orientations in 2017

More than 390 representatives from the APEC working groups were brought together in Nha Trang city, in the south central coastal province of Khanh Hoa, on February 18, to map out cooperation orientations in 2017.

Khanh Hoa (VNA) – More than 390representatives from the APEC working groups were brought together in Nha Trangcity, in the south central coastal province of Khanh Hoa, on February 18, tomap out cooperation orientations in 2017.

The meetings opened a series of activities underthe first Senior Officials’ Meeting of APEC (SOM-1) scheduled to run untilMarch 3.

The groups include the Human ResourcesDevelopment Working Group (HRDWG), Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG),Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (ACTWG), Policy Partnership onScience, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI), Intellectual Property RightsExperts Group (IPEG), Experts Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade(EGILAT), Chemical Dialogue (CD), and Business Mobility Group (BMG).

Participants proposed new measures to boostcooperation in training regional young scientists, promoting technologytransfer and application to reduce natural disaster risks and facilitate themobility of entrepreneurs, as well as promote the legal trade on timberproducts and strengthen connectivity of regional supply chains for mutual sustainablegrowth.

They also shared experience in developing humanresources in intellectual property and increasing public engagement incorruption prevention.

Chief of the Vietnamese Government InspectoratePhan Van Sau addressed a workshop on enhancing the involvement of society inpreventing and combating corruption, during which he highlighted Vietnam’spositive changes in the field.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology TranQuoc Khanh attended a meeting on increasing competitiveness, innovation andconnectivity of the PPSTI, while Deputy Director of the General Department ofIrrigation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran QuangHoai chaired a meeting of the EPWG.

Other Vietnamese ministries and agenciesproactively contributed their initiatives, including the development of acreative and innovative business ecosystem in the APEC member economies.

In the days to come, the panels will continuediscussing collaboration priorities for this year.

Established in 1989, APEC now comprises 21economies, namely Australia; Brunei; Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong, China;Indonesia; Japan; the Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; PapuaNew Guinea; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand;the United States; and Vietnam.

Vietnam joined APEC in 1998, and hosted APEC in2006.-VNA
