Chiang Mai (VNA) – Vietnamese Ambassador toThailand Phan Chi Thanh on March 22 met with Nirat Phongsittithaworn, theGovernor of Chiang Mai province, discussing measures to promote cooperationbetween the province and Vietnamese localities.
The diplomat called on theThai governor to send delegations to localities in Vietnam for establishing anddeveloping cooperation relations.
Vietnam and Thailand now have 19 pairs of localities thatformed twinning relationships and cooperation relations.
Ambassadors Thanh and governor Nirat also discussed thepossibility of establishing an Honorary Consulate in Chiang Mai and thenorthern region of Thailand to support economic and cultural cooperationbetween the localities of the two countries, support consular procedures, andcitizen protection function in Thailand.
Thanh also suggested the provincial governmentcontinue to support and create favourable conditions for the Thai community of the Vietnamese origin in the province.
Nirat emphasised that Chiang Mai, as an important localityin the northern region of Thailand, has great tourist attractions. Now, directflights from Chiang Mai to Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City are creating favourable conditions for trade and tourism between the localities of the twocountries. The provincial official affirmed that the province always respectsand supports the Vietnamese-origin community there.
Earlier the same day, Ambassador Thanh visited ChiangMai University to discuss measures to promote educational cooperation./.
