Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on October 14 handed over appointment decisions to 16 ambassadors to foreign countries for the 2024-2027 tenure.

Congratulating the ambassadors on their appointment, Lam said this is not only a great honour but also a major responsibility entrusted by the Party, State and people. Read full story

- National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man emphasised the need to continue fostering a spirit of innovation, especially innovating thinking and improving professionalism and quality in law-making while speaking at the 38th session of the NA Standing Committee on October 14 morning.

He urged relevant agencies to promptly finalise documents which are prepared for the NA's upcoming 8th session and send them to NA deputies in accordance with the Law on Promulgation of Legal Documents. Read full story

- The Vietnamese and Lao Ministries of Public Security on October 14 organised a bilateral ministerial meeting to enhance cooperation in combating crimes, maintaining social order, and tackling drug-related issues.

At the meeting in Hanoi, they reviewed the progress of their memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in drug control signed on August 9, 2021, and assessed the implementation of agreements and plans for teamwork in combating human trafficking, social order offenses, and drug trafficking along the Vietnam-Laos border. - Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha hosted a reception in Hanoi on October 14 for Chairman of China Railway Group Limited (CREC) Chen Yun who expressed his firm’s interest in participating in railway projects in Vietnam.

Hailing the development of China’s railway industry with the contributions of leading firms like CREC, Ha said that in the coming time, CREC should actively engage in standard gauge railway infrastructure projects connecting Vietnam and China, contributing to implementing the directions of the two countries' leaders in continuing to deepen and elevate the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. - The Government of the Republic of Korea (RoK) has committed 1 million USD to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support Vietnam's recovery efforts under the “Inclusive early recovery and reconstruction programme after Typhoon Yagi”.

Typhoon Yagi, the most destructive storm to hit Viet Nam in three decades, has affected 3.6 million people. With nearly 400,000 homes damaged or submerged, and infrastructure in ruins, the storm has left the country facing a recovery effort estimated at more than 81.5 trillion VND (3.3 billion USD). - The 15th ASEAN Senior Official Meeting on Sports (SOMS-15) opened in the northern province of Vinh Phuc on October 14, drawing the participation of 70 delegates from ten ASEAN member states, Timor Leste, Japan, China, ASEAN Secretariat and partners.

At the hybrid event, the secretariat updated on the upcoming actions for the decisions made at SOMS-14 held in Thailand last year while participants reviewed and worked to carry out the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports (Work Plan) for 2021-2025 and several important projects and events. Read full story

- The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has set a target of reaching a stable national forest cover rate of 42-43%, focusing on improving forest quality by 2030.

The goals were outlined in the MARD's recently announced National Forestry Planning scheme through 2030, which also sets a goal of helping the export value of wood and forestry products reach 25 billion USD by 2030. Read full story

- The Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) will officially launch the first 5G service in Vietnam on October 15, with faster internet speeds and ultra-low latency.

The 5G network theoretically tops out at 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), significantly faster than 4G. In practical conditions, 5G speeds could be around 1 Gbps, which is ten times faster than 4G. .Read full story/.
