(Illustrative photo: VNA)Hanoi (VNA) – The European Union Delegation to Vietnam and the environmentalgroup Keep Hanoi Clean (KHC) are jointly holding a clean-up in Red River areaand underneath Hanoi’s iconic Long Bien Bridge on October 12-13.
As part of the EU Climate DiplomacyWeek 2019, the event sees the participation of Ambassador-Head of the EUDelegation to Vietnam Giorgio Aliberti, members of the EU Delegation, and about200 volunteers of KHC, along with local residents.
Speaking at the event on October 12, Giorgio Aliberti said that the EU is proudof supporting this campaign, which aims to not only clean up the areas but alsoraise public awareness of this issue.
From 8am to 11.30am, and from 2pm until 5.30pm, the volunteers carry necessarytools to collect waste along the Red River banks and the area underneath LongBien Bridge.
Within the framework of the campaign, residential areas will be provided withbig rubbish bins and households will share the daily responsibility oftransporting these dustbins to the area where waste can be collected.
The programme will help poor households living near Long Bien Bridge withkeeping their living environment clean and reducing waste discharged into theRed River.
The campaign is part of the EU’s support plan for Vietnam relating to theenvironment, natural disasters and climate change as well as sustainableinvestment projects worth 350 million EUR.
Long Bien Bridge and the Red River are indispensable parts of the history ofHanoi’s formation and development. Therefore, participating in the campaign isnot only to protect the environment but to help protect the heritages of themulti-thousand-year-old capital city.
Vietnam is assessed by experts as one of the five countries hardest hit by climatechange and calamities caused by it./.
