Hanoi (VNA) – An earthquake of 6.2magnitudes on the Richter scale shook Mentawai islands of Indonesia’s WestSumatra province on September 1.
The epicenter of the quake was at 49km deep and 75kmsouthwest of the capital Padang city of the province, according to the USGeological Survey.
There have been no reports of damage and casualties inthe quake. Meanwhile, the Indonesian meteorological agency said there was nowarning of tsunami.
Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerablequake-hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
An earthquake struck the country's western Acehprovince in December 2016, killing more than 100 people and leaving tens ofthousands homeless. A 9.2-magnitude quake along with tsunami jolted theprovince in 2004, claiming more than 120,000 lives. -VNA
