Jakarta (VNA) – A 6.2-magnitude earthquakeshook the area offshore Maluku province in the East of Indonesia on the morningof September 8, but no tsunami alert was issued.
According to the Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology, andGeophysical Agency, the quakehappened at 7:45am (local time) with its centre being at 193km under theseabed, about 198km southeast of Central Maluku district.
Indonesia experiencesfrequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ringof Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. In 2018 alone, the country was hit by11,577 earthquakes which caused heavy losses in human livesand property./.
