11 Zika cases reported in central Thailand

Eleven people in Thailand's central Phichit province were confirmed to be infected with the Zika virus while 27 others are being monitored for confirmation, local authorities said on July 4.

Bangkok (VNA)– Eleven people in Thailand's central Phichit province were confirmed to beinfected with the Zika virus while 27 others are being monitored forconfirmation, local authorities said on July 4.  

Phichit’s Governor Wirasak Wichitsaengsi saidlaboratory test results had confirmed that there were 11 infections since July1 and they were all being treated.

Health officials have sent special teams to killmosquitoes in the region to stop the mosquito-borne virus from furtherspreading.

Wirasak asked people not to worry too much asthere were Zika cases in Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai before.

He also asked whoever has a high fever orsimilar symptoms to take a blood test in hospital.

Zika virus is mainly transmitted through theAedes Aegypti mosquito, blood transmission and sexual intercourse, causingfever, sore eyes and a rash. Pregnant women infected with the virus might givebirth to babies with microcephaly - a deformation that leads to abnormallysmall brains and heads.

Currently, there is no vaccine or specificmedication for the virus.-VNA
